Concussions – Timing is Everything

We all know, or you should from reading many of the articles I’ve posted here, that girls will experience more soccer concussions than boys. Their symptoms are usually much more severe experiencing headaches and sleeping issues more than twice those of boys.

Period.

No, really… period. Experts are now questioning and examining how a girls menstrual cycle affects her recovery from a concussion.

Two weeks before a woman’s period a certain hormone, progesterone, is elevated. So during this two weeks leading up to her period if she gets a concussion the impact on her head shuts off the pituitary gland; this basically shuts down her recovery and the affects of the concussion may be more sever and last longer.

Something similar may happen elsewhere in the body. A doctor was telling me that some of the most common soccer injuries in girls (e.g. ACL, meniscus, ankle sprain, etc.) occur within this two week time frame leading up to a girl’s period.

We are sure to hear more of this – guaranteed, so please stay tuned.
